High Frequency Words
Fry Sight Words

I have found that the most difficult words for first graders to read are, ironically, the words that appear most frequently in reading. High-frequency words such as "the," "are," and "they" must therefore be memorized, or learned by sight. These sight word lists help students do just that - they make reading so much easier and enjoyable. It has made a dramatic difference in my class! I have created 20 lists with five Fry words in each list (100 words total). These words make up about half of all written material. Wow! First graders are expected to read all 100 of these words by the end of the year with 100% accuracy. They are also expected to be able spell these words with 80% accuracy. The words will be introduced a few at a time and will be tested on 25 each quarter. I know it sounds like a lot, but if you study a few at a time it will be a SNAP!
